This article is written to guide you on how to remove your old toilet and replace it with a brand-new new one to give your bathroom a breath of fresh air.

How to Install a Toilet

Installing a toilet would demand you are getting minimal tools with modern pans.

Here are some major ones you would have to get:

  • Wrenches
  • Screwdriver
  • Silicone
  • Adjustable pliers
  • Pipe cutter
  • Pipe wrench
  • Box spanner
  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Bucket
  • Towel etc.

There is no way you would install a new toilet without removing the old one. This is why this article is divided into two sections: (I) Removing the old Toilet (ii) Installing the new toilet

Removing the Old Toilet

The first thing to do when you are to install a toilet is to make sure you get rid of all water in the tank or bowl. You would do this by making sure you turn off your water supply using the Isolation valve or the water pipe and then flush the toilet until there’s no water left in the tank.

A little amount of water could still be found in the tank, you can use a small cup at first, and then switch over to s heavy-duty sponge.  The leftover water found in the tank should be dump into a bucket and dispose of somewhere.

When done with that, then you proceed to disconnect the water supply. It is advisable to place a towel underneath the pipe to help catch any drips because a small amount of remaining water may spill out.

After you have done this, the next thing for you to do is to unscrew the tank bolts that fasten the basin to the bowl. You might be required to remove some silicone which was used during the installation to keep it from wobbling with time. You can do that by getting a hacksaw blade, pass it between the floor and the toilet to try and cut through the silicone. Eventually, it’ll give up, and you’ll be able to remove the toilet without a problem.

Your work in removing the toilet is uncompleted without removing the soil pipe (waste pipe) from the bottom or back of the toilet to the soil pipe. Carefully work the toilet loose from the pipe, and your toilet should be removed successfully. You will need a hand to assist you in lifting the toilet bowl and tank assembly of the closet flange bolt. An old rug newspaper should be placed under the old toilet to avoid staining your flooring.

Installing the New Toilet

Installing a toilet might look a lot more difficult than it is, but this guide would show you how simple it is.

The first thing you do when Installing your old toilet back again after removing it or installing a brand new toilet is to measure and Mark for the drill holes to secure your loo.

The next step for you is to remove your old flange and replace it with a new one. Your flange is where the toilet and drain pipe meet. The flange has two bolts on each side that secure the toilet to the ground and the pipe to the toilet. You would also see your wax seal which is a yellowish material that keeps the waste from leaking out under the toilet.

The next action to take is the preparation and examination of the toilet by test fit. You do this by temporarily setting it on the flange and checking to make sure the bolts align with the holes in the base. An important thing you must take note is your toilet sit level. If not you could level it by shimming beneath it with stainless steel or plastic wasters. After the first fit operation, remove the toilet and gently set it upside down or on its side or back but must be on a protective surface like an old rug.

Next for you is to apply the was the ring which seals out sewer gases and prevents flushed water and waste from leaking out from under the toilet during a flush. A simple plain wax ring is advised to apply if the closet flange is slightly above the finished floor, otherwise, if the closet flange is flush with the floor, or slightly below, use a wax ring with a plastic.

Your wax ring can be put in the flange directly or on the underside of the toilet but it is advisable to put it on the flange cause there’s no chance if it falls off when lugging the toilet. Get rid of all paper in the wax ring then center and press the wax ring firmly until it is well seated on the outlet. Be careful not to damage the wax ring because if the ring becomes deformed, it will not seal properly and cannot be used.

The next action in installing a toilet is to set the toilet. This operation is done by moving the toilet over the flange and line up the holes with the closet bolts. When this is done, you would then press the toilet against the floor to prevent it from falling or cracking.

Your installation is completed by turning the water supply back on to check for any leaks. That makes your installation perfect and complete!
